Catalan History
In this section you will be able to read about the stages of historical invasion that have created Catalonia from the very first celtic-Iberian settlers to the diverse population that lives here today. One of the most important moments of Catalan history was the Roman invasion of the 2cd century AD, when troops landed at Tarragona and later made it the capital of the Iberian Peninsula.  Their aim was to defeat African tribes coming up from the south of the Iberian Peninsula who threatened the power base in Rome. This marked the beginning of a new civilization, that of the Middle Ground (the Medi-terra-nean) between Africa and Rome. Since then, of course, Catalonia has lived many different stages of history: the Visigothic invasion, the Arabian conquest, Wilfred the Hairy and the creation of Catalonia as an independent state, the war of succession leading to Catalonia’s integration within the political Spanish state in 1714, the rise of fascism and the dictatorships of Primo Rivera followed by the Spanish Civil War and the dictatorship of Franco. Finally, you will be able to look at catalonia in the 21st century, a democratic state fully integrated in the Global capitalist structures of the Occident.
